MEDICARE

Medicare, explained calmly

Whether you're approaching 65 or researching for a family member, knowing the basic categories makes the conversation easier.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B)

This is the federal program: Part A mainly covers hospital care and Part B covers outpatient medical care. It does not cover everything, and some costs remain the person's responsibility.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

These are plans offered by private companies approved by Medicare that bundle coverage into one plan with its own network and its own cost rules.

Prescription drug coverage (Part D)

This is prescription drug coverage. Each plan has its own drug list and its own cost structure.

Supplement policies (Medigap)

These are private policies that help with certain costs left by Original Medicare. They are not the same as Medicare Advantage and do not combine with that kind of plan.

Useful questions to bring to the conversation

  • What coverage do you have today, and where does it come from?
  • Which doctors and specialists would you like to keep?
  • Which medications do you take regularly?
  • Do you travel or spend part of the year away from the city?
  • Which costs feel manageable each month, and which don't?
  • Which decisions do you need clarified before choosing?
