INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY COVERAGE

ACA and the Health Insurance Marketplace

Marketplace coverage is designed for individuals and families who don't get health insurance through a job. We help you understand how to look at it.

What Marketplace coverage is

The Health Insurance Marketplace, created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), is where individuals and families can compare and choose health plans. The rules, the plans available and the costs depend on where you live and on your personal situation.

Doctors and networks

Each plan works with a network of doctors and hospitals. If you already have doctors you trust, it's worth confirming whether they participate in a plan's network before deciding.

Prescription drugs

Plans cover medications differently. Write down the ones you take regularly so you can check how each plan's drug list treats them.

Premiums and out-of-pocket costs

The monthly premium is only one part. The deductible, copays and out-of-pocket maximum all shape what a full year actually costs.

What to prepare before we talk

  • Who needs coverage and their ages.
  • The doctors and clinics you'd like to keep.
  • The medications you take regularly.
  • Your Texas ZIP code.
  • What matters more to you: the monthly premium or the costs when you use the plan.
